Spring Break 2010

The kids and I had the chance to spend three days of our spring break down in New Braunfels, TX with our friends Mariah and Robert. It was so fun to have a giant sleepover with days full of fun activities. We wore poor Mariah out. I had to promise that having children is not exhausting when they come one at a time. Five all at once can be tiring for anyone.

Our trip began Tuesday morning March 16th. We left the Austin area and drove down to New Braunfels to meet Mariah for a day at the Children's museum. The kids had a great time in the medical center, the space station, the grocery store, the sand and water area, the camping grounds, the art / painting room and the build a home zone. Mariah and I were so tired by the time two hours were up, but I think the kids could have gone longer. After the museum we went to lunch at BK and then it was back to Mariah's for a little time with Robert and to get settled in. The night they treated the kids to Chuck-e-Cheese.

Wednesday the 17th ... was our day in San Antonio. I was determined to take the kids on an adventure that they wouldn't forget for a long time, so what better way to start out our day than at the toilet seat museum. That's right, it is a museum started by a man named Barney Smith and for the last 40 years he has collected toilet seat lids and decorated them with his own kind of art work. You should have seen the kids. Ü His enthusiasm was contagious. Hallie looked around and said, "Wow, you made all these?" He replied that he had. She nodded and said, "You are very talented." Our three year old was impressed. What do you all think?

After the museum it was time for some real San Antonio culture, so we headed to the Alamo. I admit that we looked for a basement entrance, but just like Pee-Wee Herman we found none. Being St. Patrick's day the Alamo was packed, so we chose to listen to a speaker explain the significance rather that wait in line to see the inside. Colin was a little disappointed, but I promised to bring him back and that seemed to help ease the pain. We then traveled across the street and down the stairs to the Famous Riverwalk (a must see in San Antonio). We walked and looked for ducks while I set out on a quest to find the best ice cream the Riverwalk has to offer. We decided on Ben and Jerry's (a good choice), but still nowhere as good as our AMY'S ICE CREAM, we have here in Austin. That night with help from Little Caesar's Pizza Robert watched all five children while Mariah and I left for a little light shopping and a trip to Alamo Draft House where we had dinner and caught the 3-D version of "Alice in Wonderland."

Thursday the 18th was our final day at the Case's home. We decided to take it a little easier and had a little girl only time with Mariah, Caitlyn, Austin and I in a little town call Greune (Green). It boasts of having the oldest Dance Hall in Texas as well as a ton of fun shopping. We then went out to lunch and picked up Colin and the little girls for some time in the New Braunfels park. We had a great time feeding the ducks (with Reagan being the only one who got wet) and playing on the playground equipment. That night Austin got a special night out with Mariah and Robert as they took her to Disney On Ice for her birthday.

It was a great trip and if it hadn't been for the two pairs of broken shoes I managed to go through it would have even come in under budget. We are lucky to live so close to such a great city full of history and entertainment, but mostly we are grateful for such amazing friends. Thanks Mariah and Robert!
