Is my house still there?

I’m ready to go home. Texas is fine for all those OTHER people, but Colorado is the home for me. There are Texas size cockroaches that come out of your bathtub and spiders that bite (Colin and I could tell you some stories). The sugar ants that aren’t so sweet had already moved in before us, without paying rent. Our 1100 sq ft. duplex, turned out to be 800 sq ft, with a mildew infested one car garage. The back yard in shaded by large trees, that are the home to tree roaches longer than my middle finger. If your dog gets out they put her in “doggie jail,” yes, that is its’ real name, and it costs $500 to get her back. They have police that are assigned to drive around your neighborhood and check that your grass isn’t too long and that your trash can isn’t put out to early (they will fine you $50 if you put it out the night before). I send the kids out to play and they come back 5 minutes later covered in sweat. It’s too hot to workout and my pants aren’t fitting anymore. Can I come home? Maybe there is a reason that my house is not selling. I’m thinking of loading the kids in the van and driving home. Do you think Mark will notice, when he gets home tonight? He may just think we’re lost under all the mess. It could take him weeks to dig through all the boxes, paper and stuff that I have no where to put in order to discover our absence. Shoot posting this blog may have been a mistake. I guess I’ll just have to stay for now.

Wow, rewind three months and that is exactly what I thought.

First of all, I think moving anywhere is hard. I love adventure, but change is still change. It takes awhile to settle in.

But honestly, I'm right with you on the bugs and the weather. The sad part is that you moved here during the worst months. Everyone told me to just imagine that it is winter (July August) and your kids are driving you nuts cause they are stuck inside and you can't wait until spring. But it will come, I promise. And the nice winter seems to last forever. Brett used to call me in November and he was still swimming in the outdoor pool, while we were bored and freezing. So hopefully you can survive this season and the rest are wonderful! I arrived in January and it was magnificent.

I'm also with you on the bugs. I never told anyone how crazy paranoid I was about the critters because I was sure that I would sound nuts. But for the first month here I wanted to cry. I could see wolf spiders crawling through the lawn, I was too scared to let the kids use their outside toy box for fear that they'd be bit by a recluse and die. Nathan had a bite swell so bad we almost took him to the hospital, and I went nuts when other mom's just shrugged it off and told me to put benadryl on it.
I was paranoid that if my blankets touched the ground the kids would have scorpions in their bed, I could go on and on. But suffice to say, I lived in fear every minute of the day.

After awhile the fear went away, I budgeted for bug treatments and haven't ever regretted it. Now when I see even the tiniest ant I call Orkin and make them deal with it. My kids are no longer terrified of spiders and snakes - although we don't see as many as we were afraid of. And once I got the mold issues and food preservation down (we put everything in cheap plastic tubs we bought from in Boise - you can buy them at Walmart) - we have settled in nicer than I would have thought three months ago.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that I've been there. It is different. But after acclimating, I feel much better. Hopefully it will be the same for you. In the meantime think about how much sweat weight you are losing and how nice it will be to exercise outside all winter long! :)

So what you are saying is that I shouldn't put Texas on our list of "must live" places? I'll remember this post next time we decide to move :) However, we would love to live in CO!

Oh hon, I get it! We see roaches the size of my hand THAT CAN FLY... luckily, they're nomadic and don't move in. Knock wood we haven't cohabitated with any of those. We just see some with the weather changes (you know, hot to hotter) I also get wolf spiders. The there are huntsman spiders (the size of my head) which can't hurt me unless you count heart failure, or funnel webs, small as a finger but deadly - or at least permaneently disabling! Grey tips, jumping spiders... oh my! And ants? Green ants bite, you need stingos. Sugar ants. Meat eaters... And snakes?! They are classified more by how deadly they are than whether or not they are deadly... I actually LET daddy long legs live in my garage because they eat redback spiders and I am ok with that idea. I cultivate that spider family! Sad, huh? All I can say is it DOES get better... then again, I STILL miss Colorado... and YOU!! LOVE YOU!!!

I guess what they say about "Don't Mess With Texas" is real. I hope that things start to get better. I would have flown home the second I saw the spider. You are braver then me.

Well COME ON BACK! We'd LOVE to have you! (just don't expect to get the fireworks back! I've become attached to them) Sorry it stinks so much.

You have to take pictures of all the bugs. I cannot even imagine it! I think of you often and hope you don't get eaten by something scary. Don't forget there is ALWAYS room for you guys up here in good old MN.

Oh, Tara, YUCK! I am so so sorry. I can think of a couple of moves where I've felt that way. You get used to the bugs after awhile... NOT! Seriously, these dry climates are the worst for nasty bugs. I will not go into my garage at night and live in deathly fear of running into a scorpion. Good luck and get the house sprayed... it helps a lot. I'm sorry you're so miserable right now... it'll get better. With your fun personality, it just has to.
